  1. What is shutter speed?

Shutter speed is the amount of time the shutter on the camera opens or closes.

  2. When are slow shutter speeds useful to photographers?

Slow shutter speed can be useful to photographers when they want the moving subject to be blurred or if you want to let more light into the photo.

  3. When are fast shutter speeds useful to photographers?

Fast shutter speeds can be useful to photographers when they want to allow less light into a photo or capture a clear image of a moving subject.

  4. What tis the recommended way to prevent camera shake when using a slow shutter speed?

If you want to tale a photo using a slower shutter speed to prevent the camera from shaking you can use a tripod to set up the camera and set a timer to take the photo that way the camera doesn't move.

  5. Do you think you have a good understanding of shutter speed? How can you use this knowledge in the future?

Yes, I could use it to change the lighting in a photo or capture motion clearly.

Motion Blur Shots:

In this photo I used colour, when the cars lights are stretched it shows the different reds and yellows in the cars tail lights. I also used lines leading out from the bright blur of when the car had been stopped.

Motion Blur Shots:

This photo uses colour in the neon green bike and balance making the photo have a sense of stability.

Freeze Action Shots:

In this photo I used emphasis by adding vignette and colour by intensifying the red in the photo to bring out the lines on the boards.

Freeze Action Shots:

In this photo I used space by cropping the photo and editing out any other people. I also used emphasis in darkening the subjects clothes and adding a darker vignette.

Panning Photography:

Panning Photography:

  1. The idea behind panning as a technique in photography is slowing the shutter speed slightly combined with moving the camera the same way the subject is moving.

  2. Panning works best in dim lighting, not dark, but dim. Because the shutter is open for longer it brings more light into the photo. If you were to do this in a bright light place the photo could come out looking very bright and hard to see. Depending on how long your shutter is open for the brightness will differ.

  3. The concept of panning is easy, all you have to do is move the camera the same speed and direction of your subject. The camera has to follow the subject in a straight line or else it will be blurred.

  4. If you want to take a panning photo you have to have a good attitude and be very patient. Panning is difficult, it takes a long time to do and I noticed that most of the photos you take are going to fail so you have to be willing to try over and over again.

  5. I don't think that my panning photos were successful because my subjects in one photo the subject was blurred along with the background, and in the other the subject wasn't moving very fast so it was hard to tell it was panning.
